About Reece
My name is Reece Gerber. I live in Surrey, B.C. with my family. Family is very important to me and I am
fortunate to have a supportive family and have close relationships with my
three brothers and both my parents. My
family has helped shape what I value: faith, integrity, and hard work. Going to church has also been a large part of
my life and has taught me about community and the importance of valuing
others. My years of education have shown
me that I love challenging myself and learning new things.
When I began high school in grade 8 I was very excited
to try something new and chose Woodworking as an elective. I didn’t realize then what an impact that was
going to have on my life. I took
Woodworking through all my high school years and it was always the course that
I looked forward to the most. I enjoyed
planning and thinking through projects, working collaboratively with my peers
and also the satisfaction of a finished product. Now being in my final year of high school
I’ve realized that Woodworking has taught me life lessons that transfer to
other areas of my life. One lesson being:
don’t be afraid to try new things and if it doesn’t work out, that’s o.k. Another lesson being: the value of putting
in the time to plan and prepare and visualize your plan before you begin a
project. Another lesson I learned: not
taking for-granted all the products we use in our everyday lives and a deep appreciation
for these things we use. Also I learned
that there is value in hard work, and in putting in the time to create a
beautiful project. Lastly, learned the
value of working with others and putting your minds together to work through
problems and difficulties that arise.
Woodworking was only one area of my high school career where I feel I excelled. In all of my courses my academic achievement was superior in terms of grades and effort. My high school career was also filled with other opportunities such as sports and volunteering. Being part of school team sports such as volleyball taught me the importance of team work and hard work. I also was fortunate to be able to be part of volunteer Mexico missions trips through my church. These trips changed my life in terms of perspective and valuing the many blessings I have in my own life.
Next year I plan to continue to further my education at Simon Fraser University in the Sciences program. I know I will be using the lessons I learned from my years in high school and applying them to my university education. I also know that the skills I acquired in woodworking will always be useful in my everyday life. It brings me such fulfillment and satisfaction to create things and this will always be part of my life. I feel fortunate to have had such great experiences in high school and am excited to begin this new journey in my life.
My interests
I want to live life to the fullest so I am committed to helping people, gifting them with whatever I am able to build or give, and to `ensuring I am of healthy mind, body, and soul. My grad project this year was to design and implement a physical fitness program for one of my peers. That project has yielded an individual who is now strong, fit, and happy.
